The International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) is pleased to announce the first online lecture dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Prof. Vladimir Aronovich LIVSHITS (1923 – 2017) will be given on September 15, 2023, by Prof. Nicholas SIMS-WILLIAMS, Fellow of the British Academy. The lecture is entitled “The Discovery of Sogdian”

The first part of the talk will describe the beginnings of Sogdian studies: the first discoveries of documents and inscriptions in the Sogdian language; the decipherment of the scripts in which they were written; and the identification of the language as Sogdian. The second part will be devoted to the earliest Sogdian texts, the recently discovered inscriptions of Kultobe in South Kazakhstan.
