The
International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) is pleased to
announce the launch of a comprehensive archaeological field study in Uzgen, the
Kyrgyz Republic held in the framework of within the framework of the Water
Supply and Wastewater Rehabilitation Project.
The project
has become a logical extension of the Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA)
performed in 2021-2022 in the framework of the UNESCO/Republic of Korea
Fund-in-Trust “Support for the Asian Silk Roads World Heritage Serial and
Transnational Nomination(s) (Phase II)” and is aimed at assessing the
anticipated impact of the proposed Water Supply and Wastewater Rehabilitation
Project on the surviving standing structures (including the Uzgen minaret and
the mausoleums) and the subsoil archeological remains.
The field
survey is performed in close cooperation with the European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the construction company in charge of
the rehabilitation activities and the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz
Republic as well as other institutional and individual stakeholders.
The
fieldwork is expected to be complemented by the desk study aimed at
safeguarding the heritage of Uzgen through complying with the national rules
and regulations and raising the key stakeholders’ awareness of the history and
the values of Uzgen.
