A group of scientists and researchers from the
Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tatarstan (Russian Federation) continues
the successful implementation of the project “Medieval cities on the transcontinental trade routes of Eurasia: urban centers of the Chui Valley and the Middle Volga region”, financially supported by the International Institute
for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) within the framework of grant cycle 2022-2023.
Geophysical studies (GPR) has been carried out
at the sites of Telek, Ken-Bulun, Sretinskoe and Burana (Kyrgyz Republic), as
well as at the site of Bilyar (Republic of Tatarstan). From March to May 2022,
a topographic survey was carried out at two sites in order to prepare a digital
elevation model (DEM). Thus, the experts surveyed and processed about 1.5
thousand hectares of the area of the site of Telek. The data obtained at the
site of Sretenskoye is being processed; additional surveys of some of its parts
are anticipated in in October 2022.
From late June to late July, with reference to
the geophysical data, excavations were carried out at the site of Bilyar. As a
result, remains of a number of residential structures and workshops were
identified; the outcomes of the study of which will be reflected in the
archaeological report.
To date, preparations are underway to start the
archaeological research at the site of Telek. The excavations are planned to
continue until October 6-7; the scientists will then be actively engaged in
desk processing of the findings and data. However, given the scale of the work,
the archaeological studies will probably be completed next year.
The outcomes of the 2022 season will be discussed
at a round table scheduled for October 7-8, 2022. Archaeologists from the
Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation are
invited to participate in the event. They will have the opportunity not only to
share views and opinions, but also visit the archaeological sites under study.
