The folk clothing of the Crimean Tatars evolved over many centuries, having gone through the stages of formation, transformation and modification, and finally shaped into a uniform national costume by the middle of the 19th century.

Headwear being regularly worn turned into a characteristic feature of the Crimean Tatar society until early 20th century. Ethnic, gender, religious belonging and birth status in the Crimean Tatar society were represented exclusively by means of headwear, which most clearly marked the emergence and decline of national culture.

A monograph showing the outcomes of the study of the key ethno-cultural marker of the Crimean Tatar society – a complex of headwear and adornments – is being prepared for publication by IICAS in July-August 2021.

"Traditional headwear and head adornments of the Crimean Tatars" by Ulviye Ablaeva is a scientific publication intended for historians, art historians, culture experts and all those interested, regardless of profession and vocation.
