Dear colleagues,
Today we celebrate the International Day for Monuments and
Sites.
The theme of the celebration this year is HERITAGE CHANGES.
The changes affect different aspects of heritage. Cultural
and natural heritage sites adapt to new climatic, social and economic
challenges. The concept of heritage expands, covering not only individual
monuments of architecture or archeology but also cultural landscapes and sacred
sites. Heritage conservation approaches also transform. The involvement of
communities and indigenous peoples, as well as the use of traditional knowledge
and practices, became the new norm in conservation.
At the same time, heritage changes us. Cultural monuments
and sites enrich our knowledge, whereas natural heritage provides us with
places for recreation. Heritage makes a significant contribution to the
economic development of communities, providing workplaces and generating income
for local economies. However, more importantly, heritage expands our horizons,
upending our worldview.
We wish you success in the difficult task of preserving our
changing heritage!
