On October 23, 2021, a visiting expert meeting was held at the ancient settlement site of Penjikent in Tajikistan, whose main purpose was to discuss a possible project for the conservation and restoration of unique architectural complexes of the famous medieval town of Penjikent, being the component of the serial transnational nomination "Silk Roads: Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor". The meeting was attended by Mr. N.K. Ubaidulloev, Director of the Akhmad Donish Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography, along with the researchers of A. Donish Institute; Dr. Pavel Lourier, the State Hermitage (Russia); educators and researchers from the Penjikent Pedagogical University; and by the IICAS representatives.
The international and national experts have discussed
numerous theoretical and practical issues of conservation and restoration, including
certain technical details of the project that had been proposed to seek funding.
In the course of the discussions, emphasis was made on the regulations on
providing preliminary information on projects planned for implementation within
the boundaries and buffer zones of World Heritage sites - to the World Heritage
Center itself and its Advisory Bodies, in particular ICOMOS, for their
professional and administrative evaluation. The experts’ discussions also
focused on the technical details of projects HIA procedures in relation the
said heritage sites. Based on the results of the meeting, as specified in its
Minutes, relevant resolutions are expected to be prepared and actioned.
