University College London (UCL) in cooperation with the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) under the scientific leadership of Prof. Tim Williams in the framework of the "Central Asian Archaeological Landscapes" international project has launched a new initiative of assembling a collection of encyclopedic data on large medieval urban centers, which, along with written sources, shaped understanding of the phenomenon known as the Great Silk Road.

The initiative will comprise the study of numerous archival materials, as well as the latest satellite images, aerial and terrestrial photos, and DEM models, which would allow us to scrutinize each site in detail in the context of the cultural landscape.

Like the "Central Asian Archaeological Landscapes" project, the encyclopedia of medieval cities along the Silk Road covers Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. The materials are expected to be published in English and Russian.
