Internships at IICAS

Professor G. S. Sultangaliyeva, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of Kazakh National University named after al-Farabi, and Dr. T. T. Dalaeva, Associate Professor, Professor of the Department of History of Kazakhstan named after. Academician T. S. Sadykov of Kazakh National Pedagogical University named after Abai, visited the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) from May 17 to May 27, 2023. The visit was arranged within the framework of the research project of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Audiovisual plots of social history and cultural memory of Kazakhstani society (late 19th – early 21st centuries)” aimed at studying the cultural heritage of Central Asia of the modern and contemporary period.

The purpose of the visit was to access and study the visual artifacts related to the history of the Turkestan region and the Steppe region at the end of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as to discuss the prospects for cooperation with IICAS and other research and cultural institutions of Samarkand.

During the internship, scientists visited the Information and Library Center named after A.S. Pushkin of the Samarkand region, where they got acquainted with rare publications on the history of the region, as well as the Samarkand State United Historical, Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve, the Samarkand Museum of Local History, where they studied the collections of photographs, painting, and decorative and applied arts.

The productive internship allowed the researchers to gain valuable experience in working with primary sources, expand their knowledge of the cultural heritage of Central Asia, and also establish contacts with colleagues from Uzbekistan for future joint research initiatives.
