International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) is pleased to announce the launch of a new project of “DIPLOMACY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE MANAGEMENT. THE CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM IN THE FIELD OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE”. This Project is implemented through the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The objective of development of this program is capacity building while revealing the theoretical and practical foundations of functioning of historical and cultural heritage management systems. 


The program is primarily intended for the diplomatic corps dealing in their line of work with the important matters of historical and cultural heritage. Training sessions will be held in a mixed format from October 10 to October 28, 2022, in the Republic of Uzbekistan and in the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well. In this course, participants will obtain up-to-date information on cultural heritage management basics, considering that this competence is one of the most important features of civilized society. The Program participants will be familiarized with the various UNESCO conventions and programs in the field of cultural heritage. Along with the lectures from leading experts, field visits to the sites located in the cities of Bukhara, Shakhrisabz, Samarkand and Turkestan will be undertaken. Theoretical knowledge obtained during the indoor sessions will be consolidated in the course of the site visits.

At the end of the Project, the Institute is planning on publishing a Methodological Guideline providing assistance to the diplomatic corps in understanding and assessing various situations in historical and cultural heritage environment, including the implications of potential impact on the heritage that may be produced by all kinds of land development projects, natural disasters, as well as identifying various possible risks to the properties.


The Program pinnacle event will be the participation of the diplomats in a series of events as part of an international conference on sustainable tourism, pilgrimage and sacral heritage, to be held in Turkestan from October 26 to 28, 2022.
