In the middle of the last century, the desert areas of Ustyurt, lying between the Aral and Caspian seas, remained a huge blind-spot on the archaeological map of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. However, the development and implementation of a large-scale program of archaeological research changed the situation in the early 70s. At different times, the study of the territory was carried out by the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan and the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. At the beginning of the 21st century, archaeological research in Ustyurt and Mangyshlak was started by scientists from the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan.

The purpose of the new project is to popularize the results of studies of comprehensive archaeological materials, as well as anthropological collections from the Kazybaba 1 burial mound located on the territory of South-Eastern Ustyurt. These data will make it possible to include Ustyurt in the vast settlement area of the "Savromat-Sarmatian" and "late Sarmatian" tribes and to study the problems of interaction and the nature of the ties between the civilizations of Ancient Khorezm and the vast world of nomadic tribes of the Southern Urals, the Lower Volga region and the Aral-Caspian Sea, linked by the pasture-nomadic system.

The scientific work “Steppe tribes on the north-western borders of Khorezm in the 6th-5th  centuries BC – 3rd-4th centuries AD" which is a logical completion of research work conducted on the materials of the Kazybaba 1 burial mound, will significantly facilitate the continuity of archaeological cultures and the relationship of ancient Khorezm with the nomadic stock-raising periphery.

IICAS schedules the publication of the book for the second half of 2021.
