On November 29, 2022, a new online-workshop was held as part of the MEROS: (Mutual Engagement in aRchaeOlogical heritage and Science) Program: Interaction in the field of archaeological heritage and science.

The organizers of the event were:

·        The Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan

·        Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties

·        International Institute for Central Asian Studies

·        Ya. Gulyamov Archaeology Institute, city of Samarkand

Ms. Natsuki Murakami, a researcher at the Nara Institute of Cultural Property, made a presentation on the topic of “Study of cultural values using the X-ray fluorescence analysis technique”. In her presentation, Ms. Murakami answered such questions such as:

·        What the main approaches and principles of X-ray fluorescence analysis are.

·        What X-ray fluorescence spectrum is and what types of spectrometers are out there.

·        What can be determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis and what is cannot?

·        What should we pay our attention to when performing X-ray fluorescence analysis?

·        Are substances chemically homogeneous?

·        What limits of identifiable elements are there and what is the depth of the information obtained as a result of this?

The report raised great interest among the participants of the seminar. In particular, the specialists were interested in the issues of using X-ray fluorescence analysis as a non-contact, non-destructive method for analyzing certain archaeological artifacts.

The next stage of the MEROS program will be to conduct an offline series of seminars with practical sessions in Uzbekistan. The preliminary list of topics for the future lectures is:

·        Color perception and ways of measuring it;

·        Study of the environment surrounding the assets of cultural heritage.
