On October 26-28, 2022, the city of Turkistan of the Republic of Kazakhstan will be hosting "The People Protecting Monuments", an international conference on sacral heritage, pilgrimage and sustainable tourism.

The International Institute for Central Asian Studies is one of the partners for the event which will be attended by more than 400 people, including 60 experts from as many as 20 countries.

The plenary session will be dedicated to the key topic of Historical Urban Landscapes: Tourism Development and Preservation of Sites. On October 26, the conference session topics will be: “Special aspects of tourism development at sacral sites and pilgrimage routes”, “The history of sacral places of Central Asia”, “Management of cultural heritage sites”, “Tourism promotion and marketing at sacral sites: best practices and recommendations”. On October 27, the following topics will be covered: "International cooperation of educational institutions in the field of sacral tourism", "Spiritual layers in the culture of the Turkic peoples", "Sacral heritage sites preservation, restoration, and documentation", "Study of medieval manuscripts and codices". The participants of the conference will have an opportunity to attend a management workshop dedicated to "Developing a UNESCO World Heritage Site Management Plan (application of HUL approaches to developing a management plan)".

The Republic of Kazakhstan will present for general review its experience in the development of cultural and historical landscapes and sustainable tourism associated with sacral sites, based on the case study of the Khoja Akhmed Yassawi Mausoleum. It is planned to draw up a list of specific recommendations for further preservation of this cultural heritage site as a result of this session.

On the conference sidelines, it is planned to discuss, review and adopt the Turkistan Declaration on sustainable tourism development on sacred heritage places.
