On the 12.05.2022 the International Institute
for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) warmly hosted Dr. Shinya Shoda, Head of the International
Cooperation Section of Nara National Research Institute for Cultural
Properties. The aim of Dr. Shoda’s visit to Samarkand was to make arrangements
for the MEROS: Mutual Engagement in aRchaeOlogical heritage and Science intensive
capacity-building program financed by the Agency for Cultural Heritage,
Government of Japan and to be held in the coming months in the mixed format
(both in-person and online). The training will be dedicated to knowledge
transferring of the innovative laboratory methods of the analysis of archaeological
artifacts.
During the 1-week intensive field trip in the
framework of the preparatory phase Dr. Shoda and Dr. Voyakin managed to hold
several kick-off meetings at IICAS and Samarkand Institute of Archaeology of
the Republic of Uzbekistan as well as to undertook field trips. The meetings
were aimed to identify the current state of local facilities, working
environment, and storage of cultural property, as well as exchange views with
participating experts.
The first stage of the capacity-building
program is expected to be split into practical on-site and online sessions to
be held in the years 2022-2023.
