Call for Papers 


We are pleased to announce the official “Call for Papers” for the “7th Salzburg International Conference on Syriac Christianity in China and Central Asia” which will be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from September 21 to September 25, 2023. The conference is jointly organized by the University of Salzburg/Center for the Study of the Christian East (ZECO) and the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS).

Thursday, September 21:                Morning: Registration from 10:00 to 12:00

Afternoon: Conference Section

Evening: Welcome Reception

Friday, September 22:                     Conference (full day)

Saturday, September 23:                 Conference (full day)

Sunday, September 24:                   One-day trip to Urgut Suleiman Tepa archaeological

excavation site and Samarkand city tour

Monday, September 25:                  Conference (full day)

Tuesday, September 26:                  Departure

 

Tue-Wed, September 26-27:           Optional: Two-day trip to Bukhara

 

Papers

We invite scholars to submit an abstract (250-350 words) of original research on all aspects of Syriac Christianity in China and Central Asia for a 20-minute presentation in English. Please send your abstract including your name and current institution to Salzburg3.conf@plus.ac.at no later than April 30, 2023. Accepted speakers will be notified with further information on registration by the end of May, 2023.

 

Registration Fee (mandatory): € 100. The registration fee covers lunches and coffee breaks during the conference section, conference room hire, technical facilities/beamer, conference folders, photocopies, administration fees etc., as well as a day-trip in Samarkand and to Urgut.

 

2-Day Excursion (optional): For those who want to participate in our 2-day excursion to Bukhara, there will be a ticket charge of €140 per person. The ticket covers a coach journey, admissions, accommodations incl. breakfast, lunch, dinner, and tour-guide services in Bukhara.

Hotel Reservation

We will book ca. 50 rooms in advance in the event hotel with a special conference rate which is still being negotiated. An estimated daily rate is US$70-80 per room including breakfast. A finalized rate together with booking information will be communicated to participants in due course.

 

Visa

Please ensure that you have the right travel documents for entering Uzbekistan. Further information about visa application will be sent out to conference participants when needed.
