In the end of 2019 the International Institute for Central Asian Studies was invited by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Center for Silk Road Studies under the Presidium of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences to implement the preparatory study of the potential of the historical and cultural heritage sites of Azerbaijan for the eventual inclusion in the list of components of the Serial Transnational Nomination “Silk Roads: Caspian (Volga-Caspian) Corridor” the main vector of which was following the Kura River.

The itinerary of the expedition covered the coastal area of so-called “Big Caucasian Passage” (its central part) located between the Big Caucasian Mountains and the Caspian Sea, as well as the valley of Kura River.

In total 16 historical and cultural heritage sites were studied; 6 components belong to the “Caspian Corridor” and 10 components belong to “Kurin Corridor”. A considerable amount of material was processed with the use of the newest technologies and equipment and was the basis for preparation of topographic foundation, orthophotoplan and 3 models. The preparatory study has shown a high potential of the sites of Azerbaijan for the inclusion as the components of the Serial Transnational Nomination of the Silk Roads in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
