The year of Kazakhstan in Uzbekistan was marked in the research field by the implementation of several joint international Kazakh-Uzbek projects initiated in 2018-2019 by the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.
The main goal of IICAS is to attract the attention of the international community to the problems of historical and cultural development of Central Asia and strengthen cooperation between researchers through the multidisciplinary studies of this vast region.
On 24 December the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Republic of Uzbekistan, together with IICAS, held the conference "The Year of Kazakhstan in Uzbekistan. Joint Research Projects: Results and Prospects", which concluded the joint activities of researchers from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the framework of the above-mentioned international projects.
Participants of the conference heard and discussed reports of the prominent Kazakh and Uzbek researchers, and also learned about the unique materials received during the complex archaeological works on the territory of the ancient settlement of Sygnak located in the Kyzylorda Region of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The medieval Sygnak, which was a part of various ethno-political formations and played political, economic and cultural role, was the centre of Kypchak Khanate (XI-XII centuries), Ak Orda (XIII-XV centuries), Khanate of Abylkhair (XV century), Kazakh Khanate (XVI century).
The burial mound of many famous historical personalities, such as Erzen khan, Abulhayir khan, has the greatest sacred significance.
A film dedicated to the Sygnak Archaeological Expedition and numerous three-dimensional models of the magnificent beauty and masterful execution of gold jewelry and architectural decoration found during the excavations were presented to the participants of the conference. The multicoloured mosaic panel deserves a special attention.
A special discussion platform at the conference was organized for the participants to discuss the extensive database and website "Archive Materials of Central Asia" providing users with a wide range of different levels of access through the Internet. The database contains the unpublished research materials in the field of the humanities of the Central Asian region. The archives involved in the project are owned by Uzbek and Kazakh scientific institutes. These archives will be interesting for the researchers in the fields of archaeology, history, ethnography, local historians and all those interested in history and culture of the Central Asian region.
